Stay safe On The Internet – Part 1 – Passwords

More and more people are loosing money and important online accounts when someone gets a hold of their password. In many cases this can be stopped or the damage, at the very least, minimised. So here is my crash course on  how to avoid any problems with passwords.

1.

Use a difficult to guess password, dont use a name or nickname, these are very easy to guess and will be the first choice for any password hackers. Try to include a number (or more than one) within your password. whether it be at the start, middle or end. This in itself will just add a little more complexicity to the password. THe number does not necessarily have to be “1″, “1″ is very easy to guess.

2.

Never write your password down on paper or on your computer. Having your password written down means that someone else can see the password if they look for it. If your emails get hacked and you have your password for facebook stored in an email then that person also has access to your facebook.

If you must write your password down then make sure it is in a very safe place, most phones come with a “pin area”. This allows encrypted data to be stored, if the wrong pin is put in then the wrong password is displayed. A very good feature as long as you remember the pin number.

3.

Do not under any circumstance give your password out over email, this gives access to your password to an external source. If your webhost (for example) asks for it then refuse they have access to all accounts from their admin panel and do not need it. In most cases it is someone using a very similar email address who is trying to get the password out of you for all the wrong reasons.

I also recommend not forwarding it to family or friends as the connection or mail server you use may not be secure. Plus if a friend/family member does have your password in their emails and their account gets hacked your details are available to view and abuse.

4.

Regularly change your passwords as this will make them less guessable. If you change your password every 2-3 months then your account will be much more secure and much less likely to be hacked.

I hope these tips are of some use to you all and will help reduce the number of hacked email or any type of accounts. If you have any more hints or tips then please do leave a comment bellow.

  2. Thanks for the tips and reminders. The only problem I guess with having difficult passwords is that I also forget them sometimes. Do you recommend a software or program that remembers passwords for you? Is it ok to use the one that comes with Firefox?
