Search Engine – Result Test – Who is the best ?
Welcome to the second edition of my Search engine posts. This version will look at the top four search engines in further detail to further help us on our way to deciding which Search engine is the best to use. Just to remind you the search engines in question are Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask
The test which I will be carrying out in the post is all based around how fast the search engines retrieve their results and how many results are retrieved.
However the number of results can be looked at as being a little irrelevant at this current point, it will be further looked at in our next post which will look at how well search terms are analysed and results provided from these searches.
The Test
As our benchmark we are going to look at a simple keyword "sport" and after this I am planning to look into a more specific search term. For the more specific search term I will use "Berwick Bandits" this being a local sports team and fitting in with the first term.
Google :
Search : Sport : This search produced 728,000,000 results (roughly) in 0.08 seconds
Search : Berwick Bandits: This search produced 23,400 results (roughly) in 0.25 seconds
Yahoo :
Search : Sport : This search produced 3,770,000,000 results in 0.48 seconds
Search : Sport : This search produced 126,000 results in 0.52 seconds
Bing :
Search : Sport : This search produced 661,000,000 results in 0.47 seconds
Search : Sport : This search produced 44,700 results in 0.56 seconds
Ask:
Search : Sport : This search produced 121,000,000 results in 0.77 seconds
Search : Sport : This search produced 6,200 results in 0.61 seconds
In all cases Google was drastically faster then their competitors by a huge amount. In the first test their closest competitor was roughly 0.4 seconds slower than Google. These numbers I will admit are tiny and will not really matter but it does allow you to see the effort that Google have put into their search engine to make it simply the best.
Google does seem to provide a very large amount of results which in my opinion shows how much they crawl the internet and just how many sites they really are covering. It is quite apparent however that Bing has a similar number of results for both keywords.
In my personal opinion from looking at these results I would say that Google are the quickest and appear to give you most results.
I do believe however that this test will be nullified in the next month when Google release their new search version.
This version completely changes how Google look at keywords and how they index websites. The new system has a larger database but also works at almost double the current speed.
So far this is two out of two for Google. Will they win the relevance test ? Log on, on Monday to see.
