Police back down over domain name

The Government's police inspectorate has backed down after protests from social media activists over its choice of name for a new website.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) had unveiled plans for a project called MyPolice.org.uk.

But the name was already being used by a project started in 2009, intended to allow crime victims and others to report feedback to police forces.

HMIC said it had chosen to stop using the name to avoid confusion.

"To ensure the public gets the benefits of both services with no chance of confusion, we will change the name of the 'my police' pages on our website," HMIC said in a statement.

"We are currently consulting on the best option, and will announce the results in the next week."

The HMIC website was intended to be used by members of the public to find out information about how their local force is performing.

10 stories that could be April Fools… but aren’t

It's a day when the news itself comes with a health warning - beware of stories which turn out not to be true. But not every weird report is an April Fool. Here is a round-up of some of the day's seemingly hoax news stories which are actually true.

1. Coastguards in Falmouth, Cornwall, picked up a distress signal call from a ship named the MV Titanic in the Caribbean. Three people were on the ship which was taking on water and suffering from electrical failure.

2. Chilli grower Woody Woods, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, is laying claim to the world's hottest variety of pepper. Tests carried out by Warwick University rate the Infinity chilli at 1,067,286 on the Scoville Scale, which is used to measure the heat of peppers - hotter than the Bhut Jolokia variety which is used for crowd control by the Indian Army.

Drive Traffic to Your Blog with Adgitize – from Adgitize

I checked a random sample of advertiser’s clicks today to see what kind of traffic numbers are generated by advertising on the Adgitize Ad network. I was quite happy with the traffic and you will be too.

Random Sample Produced 14,705 Click Throughs

I randomly grabbed 9 active advertisers in the Adgitize Ad Network. I measured from March 1st till today, March 28th. The advertisers received a total of 14,705 clicks between them for the 28 days. That converts out to 525 clicks per advertiser.

Advertising on the Adgitize Ad Network will on average generate 58 click throughs to your blog each day. A strong ad with great branding and a well written blog could up those numbers to 75 clicks a day and I know a couple of blogs are receiving close to 100 clicks a day.

Broadband For All UK – 2010 Budget

Chancellor Alistair Darling reiterated the government's commitment to making Britain a digital world leader, with plans for a major broadband roll out.

He announced super-fast broadband for 90% of homes by 2017, funded by a £6 annual tax on landline phones.

The Conservatives have vowed to scrap the tax if they win the next election.

Fast net services will create "hundreds of thousands" of new jobs while putting services online will lower the cost of public spending, the chancellor said.

He also promised more tax breaks for the UK's computer games industry.

"The UK has the potential to be a digital world leader. It needs high-speed broadband for rural areas as well as urban, it must not be limited to the well-off," the chancellor said in his budget speech.

A Quick Loading Website

It is essential for any website to have a quick loading time. The faster it loads the quicker your customers/visitors see your website or product. SO many websites fail because they have slow loading pages which is not always caused by the host alone.

Here are a few things you can look out for  to see how fast your website loads.

1. Checking a loading time

If you think your page is really quick or mabey want to see what difference in loading time 2 different page layouts have then you really want a way to check your loading speed. There are of course some software which can be bought to do this job but I personally use Webwait (link at end of post). It is a totally free online system which allows you to test a page for any number of times with a gap of your choice inbetween tests.
