Stop Sbloggers on Wordpress MU

Okay while working alongside LBLOG I was involved in the work on reducing and trying to eliminate spam user registration. Here is our first step, a very simple step but also fairly effective. Roughly halfing the number of spam users. A simple Google search for "Spam Wordpress MU Users" found a simple fix and we are testing currently to see if it helps. Here is the solution :

# BEGIN ANTISPAMBLOG REGISTRATION
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .wp-signup\.php*
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !.*lmblog.co.uk.* [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^$
RewriteRule (.*) http://die-spammers.com/ [R=301,L]
# END ANTISPAMBLOG REGISTRATION
This code should be placed into you .htaccess file, at the end appears to be best. This system is not impossible to beat but is atleast one more wall between you and spammers.
Also remember to change the lmblog.co.uk to your blog address. die-spammers.com is a common address to send spammers to but you can make this whatever you want.

Stay safe On The Internet – Part 1 – Passwords

More and more people are loosing money and important online accounts when someone gets a hold of their password. In many cases this can be stopped or the damage, at the very least, minimised. So here is my crash course on  how to avoid any problems with passwords.

1.

Use a difficult to guess password, dont use a name or nickname, these are very easy to guess and will be the first choice for any password hackers. Try to include a number (or more than one) within your password. whether it be at the start, middle or end. This in itself will just add a little more complexicity to the password. THe number does not necessarily have to be "1", "1" is very easy to guess.

Google Buzz (Taken from BBC.co.uk)

Google has taken the wraps off its latest social network known as Buzz.

The service - integrated directly with its e-mail service Gmail - allows users to post status updates, share content and read and comment on friends' posts.

The site pitches Google directly against rival networks such as Facebook, which has amassed nearly 400 million users since its launch in 2004.

Buzz will try to capitalise on the number of regular Gmail users, which is currently around 170 million people.

BBC News technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said that the launch appeared to be a "major land grab by Google for the social networking space".

"They've launched Buzz with plenty of interesting new features, particularly for mobile users, but the real question is whether there's enough to entice social networkers away from sites like Facebook and Twitter," he said.

Why get paid blog hosting ?

A question that so many bloggers ask themselves when they are using a free hosting service. A good question aswell and one that may not always point to getting paid hosting. Here I will look at all the areas you should cover before going to paid hosting for your blog.

Financially
Really before you look at any other reasoning for getting paid I think it is important to look at the financial implications.  Can you afford to pay out the monthly fee ? If no then perhaps it is worth building up your visitors before you move over perhaps your ad revenue will pay for the hosting.

If you are looking to use ad revenue to pay for your hosting then are you guaranteed to get atleast enough for your hosting each month from your ads?
